whirlpool awm 336 suspected half-load sensor problem

Hi. Our washer doesn't wash clothes very well now and I noticed the water level is normally low. whereas there used to be a water line visible thru the door whilst washing but its never that high now. It's the whirlpool AWM 336 and it claims to have "automatic half load". I wonder if the sensor is jammed or broken and therefore only half filling every wash. Anyone else had this problem or know where to look for the half load sensor? Can you just disconnect the sensor and do without it? This machine is 10 years old and owes us nothing but I'd rather hang on to it if it is easily fixed.
