Whirlpool washer won\\\'t agitate or spin

I have a whirlpool washer GSW 9650LW0 and it won\\\'t agitate or spin. I am only getting a humming sound when i put it on spin or try to start it. Please advise if there is a problem with the gearbox or it might only be the capacitance.

Don't recognise the model number as it's not European. However, if it's the "American" style top loader it would be worth checking the capacitor across the motor first.
