watching something about a possible floating city at the moment..
they are on about cruise ships and their engines providing power.

why don't they make nuclear powered cruise ships?
they currently use diesel engines and most don't direct drive the propellers anymore rather they just generate electricity.

they have nuclear subs so why can't they have small nuclear reactors to provide power for the cruise ships?

as for a floating city then they could have wind turbines on the periphery and solar panels on every roof..
excess power could be used to split the sea water into hydrogen and oxygen for use in fuel cells at night ( the resultant pure water waste then used for drinking water.. )

Slightest hint of anyone getting radiation poisoning or a technical mistake and can you imagine the claims!

Seem to remember the case of a greyhound coach being involved in a prang in america many years ago, but the company didn't have a record of the names of the passengers - there were over 3000 claims for whiplash

Or, to reiterate the point - http://uk.travel.yahoo.com/p-promo-3312569

Nuclear power on cruisers?

Terrorist attack?
Environmental Disaster?
Sinking?
Risk of Exposure?

Who would want to go on a cruise sitting on atomic piles??

Atomic Kitten, now that's different....

Nuclear is used for powering ships however these are usually millitary and as far as I am aware, not in our countries ships. I think Russia and the USA use it.

The big downside with nuclear is cost (initial outlay) and what to do with the fuel once it has been spent. There is also the added security risk with terrirists getting hold of nuclear material with which they can make a dirty bomb.

because the technology is all with the navies of the world..

and mickey mouse could not afford the reacter....
