Anyone got an idea of why this tank might have split as it did? I am doing the decorating but am curious as to why this might have happened.

Looking at it I would say probably age and poor installation as it is a very old Fortic also check the overflow connection at the top. Quality piece of work!
But where is the split as said????

do you mean the soldered seam where the tub meets the domed bottom?

is it made of copper? is the water hard or soft? I can see it is rather old because it has no factory-fitted foam insulation.

Tha tank on the top is only sat on the tank at the bottom, they are connected by the tube in the pic.

One or the other must have corroded.
 
look at the tank jacket it's burnt to a crisp, i'd say faulty stat in the immersion & poss blocked or frozen vent
