Judging from your location I assume it is a top loader you are talking about.
This is mostly a UK forum so deals mainly with European designs.
However saying that
Alot of the UK Whirlpool top loaders have a rebber drive connector to the motor from the gearbox
This does wear and will smell like burning rubber if it gets bad
Fairly easy to replace on the ones I have done by tipping machine back against a wall removing the motor and replacing the drive coupling
Not so easy if you are not mechanically inclined though.
the drive couplings I have done consisit of two parts
a three pronged plastic part
a rubber part with 6 holes (sometimes this can be rotated so that the prongs line up with the unused holes if the wear is not too bad but generally when they start smelling it is time to replace them)
Note the above though is for machines I have seen in the UK only so may be different for yours.
