Anyone know about it? It's just offered itself to me.

Is it significant?

It's in now... PC seems to be going faster.

I don't know if that's because of the SP, or because I did a big backup to the second drive, and took it out in its caddy. So there is now only one hard drive, and about 20Gb less stuff than before.

I think a lot of people will be interested to know how you get on with this last upgrade. Hope you find the time to report back your findings

it took 30 minutes to install itself and appears to be working OK, and faster than before.

Do you reckon it's worth having?

I've not been advised on auto updates that it's available.......... :cry: wonder why?

There is a school of thought along the lines of "If you have a stable XP and want to keep it that way do not install MS updates" :D

So far I have resisted the urge to upgrade having had occasional issues with hotfixes that stopped other applications working properly.

From the limited information I have seen I believe that SP3 has not added any really new functionality and the majority of hotfixes have been available as individual updates already. So the main features added are Network Access Protection, "Black Hole" Router Detection and Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module. Question is do I really need these new features and what risk do I expose my system to if I do not install?

So I welcome the views of anyone who has already gone down this route.

empip - looks like a very interesting link :cool:

I will not download ANYTHING that only 'Runs' and installs on line, and cannot be saved and run at my leisure.
As the M$ update site for SP3 only performed a download and Run operation, I looked elsewhere for it.
This third party site had the SP3 download and so I got it and saved to Desktop.

I know it is a big download because M$ cannot scan your computer and only download the relevant bits, so you get the lot. Which is good if you want to load on more than one computer because you have the full SP3.

I set both my machines to download at almost the same time and the XP Pro was showing estimated time as 10 minutes. The XP Home showed 1 hour 22 minutes so I stopped the download.
When I had it on the desktop of the Pro machine I burned it to CD which took another 8 minutes.
I then clicked to install on the Pro machine and that took another 12/15 minutes.
Ran it for a day and a half with what I thought was no after effects so I used the disk and installed onto the second PC.
Everything went fine again.

Just discovered one small flaw. . . the thumbnails in My Pictures had all lost their names, the ballon showed the names when I scrolled over them but no name box under the thumbnail.
If that has happened to anyone else, here is the quick cure.
Open My Documents and then hold down the Shift Key and double click on the My Pictures Folder.

Just got this from a friend:
Just to add, these are the Microsoft links for the SP3 "offline" downloads:

The first one is called the "Network Installation Package" - which is a bit misleading, as it can easily be installed on a single user PC. It just includes the facility to deploy it over a corporate network if you want to.

The second one is an .iso image of the SP3 CD-ROM, which you can burn to a disc and install from there.

Just downloaded and installed to Toshiba A200 Notebook XP Pro SP3
30 mins to download AND Install.... Boot to boot.
All working fine.
Carried out via Wireless Lan. across two floors - pushing 6Mb/sec (around our profile limit.) - well chuffed.

================

Desktop also SP3'd no problems - Drive Ghosted (dos) - no problems.
All browsers running ok - email etc.

================
Both updates were via normal everyday XP -update- .
