The sash window fittings I'm painting have old paint on them, what is the best way to remove the paint? I should have tried to take them off before painting I suppose, although I'm not sure I can remove them yet. Also to make them nice and black again is it normal to paint them with something?Any help appreciated.

Taking them off is a good idea, take them to a door dipping place.

or paint on some nitromors and see what happens

Old paint is often brittle enough to chip off with a suitable tool such as an old screwdriver, used carefully to avoid scratching. I then use nylon brushes mounted on a polisher to finish door and window fittings before repainting them, if appropriate. A soft Scotchbrite pad would be OK for this. All far less messy than using paint stripper.

I use a satin black from Hammerite for painting steel fittings.

what ever you do dont chip it off as it will make a mess of them. i reckomend a paint stripper. although paintstrippers do have high voc`s you now get them solvent free :) that would be your best bet

cake them in paintstripper leave the stripper on over night remember rubber gloves as it is dangerous stuff. then the next day get a nailbrush and hot water and scrub them and it should remove all paint if not cake them in paintstripper again and leave for a few hours the more you put on the quicker it works =]
