Hi,

I’m looking to either:- upgrade the current double glazing units (28mm) OR, both, the units and frames (70mm) in one of our rooms. I have a couple questions to help me decide.

Option 1 - One local company offer a double glazing option with much improved acoustic and thermal performance than ours. But the glazing unit depth is 28.8mm… Will that be compatible with our 70mm frames or not?

Option 2 - they also offer a 36.8mm triple glazed unit which is far superior. But certain this will require new deeper frames. My question regarding this is… would we need to cut the plasterboard back on the interior of the reveals to accommodate the thicker frame? Or would we be able to avoid cutting the reveals back and have it protrude further out from the property by 8mm or whatever? I’d read online the windows should be set back from the front face of brick by 38mm or so. But not sure if that’s true or whether I could just have them 8mm closer to the brick face without that being an issue?

Looking for guidance on both and sorry if these are silly questions

Thanks all

Ged

Option 1. 28.8mm will be tight but will fit....just.

Option 2. Ask the question on how thick the frames are in order to accommodate a 36.8mm unit, you may find that it's only a slimmer glazing bead which allows a thicker unit and the frame remains 70mm, do check with them

Thanks that was good advice.

I asked

- 28.8mm fine. As you said. Fine for 70mm frame

- 36.8mm - also as you said. They seem to think it will be fine with a lower profile bead both sides. This would be much more preferable than changing frames etc. as I’ve got French doors with windows either side which I really didn’t want to have removed. Sounded like a total ball ache.

I’ll investigate this other bead option and update the thread accordingly
