Windows 10

Hi everyone.

I have a Lenovo laptop that comes with Windows 8. Just recently everytime I switch it on, in the bottom right hand corner (where the date and time are) it pops up with an icon asking me to reserve my free copy of Windows 10. Please can somebody tell me, if by upgrading to Windows 10, it will affect my laptop in anyway?......by this I mean, will it move things around that I have saved on laptop? will it change things, like my picture on my desktop? will it move icons around on my desktop?.....the reason I am asking these questions, is because I have a lot of precious photo's etc, saved on my laptop, of my late husband.....so im a bit reluctant to upgrade to Windows 10, unless I know that it wont change anything to things I have saved on it.

As far as I know, it will save your precious photo's. Apparently the desktop defaults to a slide show of anything contained in "My Pictures" folder.

In theory!
If I 'upgraded' to W10, I'd be sure to back up all my data - pictures and all - beforehand. In fact, I have a feeling that Microsoft recommend that.

it would be a very good idea to backup your data onto DVDs, though. Regardless of Windows 10, one day your computer will crash.

Backing up is always a good idea as every computer fails eventually, regardless of what version of windows you choose to use. To answer your question succinctly, nothing you have saved (pics, documents, programs etc) will be affected by upgrading....work away

thanks for the replies. As you have said, I will be backing up things I have saved on my computer. I went out yesterday and bought a 500gb portable hard drive to do this........it was just that I was being cautious about upgrading to Windows10 because when Windows 8 came out, a lot of people said it was horrible, hard work and worse than the original Windows......so I was trying to gain a foresight into Windows 10, to see how people felt about it. Im not very technically minded when it comes to computers etc, so my questions probably sound daft to a lot of people

just curious but do you have any access to free online storage
amazon prime
if you have a google phone
some internet providers also have free storage

home burnt backup discs are ok but they dont generally last more than 5 years depending on how they are burnt

my daughters pictures from birth to now are stored in the following places
on the pc
backed up daily to a network drive
backed up weekly to google

is the 500gb hard drive a SSD drive (ie no moving parts ) or is it more like a normal hard drive

oh the upgrade from windows 8 to 10 is easy and a big improvement

Just to say that generally, as far as DVD-rs are concerned, it's the quality of the disc itself, and the type of dye used that limits the life.

bit out of date, but I think it's still generally OK.
I've got DVDs that are ten years old and counting, and still read OK. I only trust them as a secondary type of backup though.
