Windscreen wipers - Ford Escort Van

Hi

Posted about my van before!!! This time I have a question about the wipers, or to be precise the linkage mechanism that connects the two together.

On two seperate occasions now (one being today, the other being 4 months ago) the linkage has come undone and the passenger wiper has stopped working whilst the drivers side merrily carries on (and gets caught in the passenger side wiper). All I have done to rectify this is to push the linkage arm back onto the hub type thing.

What I want to know is firstly is there some sort of clip that should hold the linkage arm onto the hub thing, and secondly is this something that can be repaired without having to replace the whole wiper mechanism.

Hi Stuart re- your wiper problem. As you state this is not the first time this has happened, it is reasonable to assume that there should be something holding the mechanism in place. Am not sure of the setup on escorts these days, however if you go to your nearest breakers yard am sure you'll be able to pick up a new mechanism for a very reasonable cost. Or if possible can you not secure your own one with a nut and bolt arrangement.

My Dad also has the same van and I have looked at his, the arm is firmly fixed but I can't see what or how it is held in place!

Usually theyre just a ball and socket sort of assembly and the socket wears out over the years. Scrappy is your best bet

Thanks for the replies, managed to source one from a local breakers yard, it is still on the car at the moment so I am collecting it later today.

The guy in the breakers yard said they are simple to fit and I've had a look at the van today and it seems easy enough.

New wiper mechanism is now fitted and working perfectly

I even have a spare wiper motor now, just in case
