I want to change a 2 way light switch to a dimmer switch. The existing wiring has a red and a black wire going in at 2 terminals in the bottom and a grey wire going in at the top and is also earthed. The dimmer switch has 3 terminals along the bottom marked ~ L1 L2. Which colour wires do these correspond to?

Red, black and grey is an odd combination.
What are the markings on the old switch?

That grey wire may be a double insulated single conductor.

A photo would be good.

As Spark has said. need to know what colour wires go in which terminals on the old switch before advising further.

The grey wire goes into L1 at the top, black to L2 and red to L3. The grey wire is thicker than the other two.

L1 -> ~
L2 -> L1
L2 -> L2

But you really ought to have a proper understanding of how electrical circuits work, what switches do etc before fiddling with them.

Also, are you aware of how things will work when you replace one of a pair of 2-way switches with a dimmer? Where is the light and where is the other switch?

Thanks for that. There is a central pendant and a pull cord which I don't use. [/b]
