Unless there is a neutral at the switch, then this isn't going to work.
Describe what wires were at the switch originally.
Switches do not require a neutral connection; they only switch the live.
However, your new light will need a neutral connection.
Remember that blue or black wires in switches are not necessarily neutral.
When the new light works, does it appear dim?
Is the original switch a 2 way one, ie another switch also controls the same light?
Is there a set of black or blue wires in a connector block tucked inside the switch box by any chance?
Photos would be most welcome.
