I want to rig a downlighter under the stairs and the most convenient wiring point seems to be a ring main spur (fused at 13A) in the wall. Can I use that to wire up the downlighter or must it be from the lighting circuit? WOuld it simply be a matter of replacing the 13A with a 3A?

Thanks in advance.

As long as the fuse spur is not supplying anything else I cant see a problem with that, as you said, use a 3 Amp / 5 Amp fuse. Is it a switched fuse spur or are you going to run a supply from the spur to a switch then to the light?

what is the ring main spur for?

if it is currently not being used then yes you can use it, and put a 3 amp fuse in it, and 1mm twin & earth cable from the spur to your light (if you change or if it is a switched spur you save on wiring as no extra switch required for thenew light)

If how ever it is being used by some thing else then you should install another spur on the ring, you can not spur off a spur

Thanks for the quick replies - and most helpful. As ever the project moves on and now I plan to try and rig two lights from the same spur - which is fused but not switched. One is wall light and the other the downlighter. Based on replies I believe I can rig a two switch socket to control both lights BUT would appreciate guidance on the wiring scheme.
