Let's hope that whoever installed the wiring did it properly.
Personally I'd check which wires were live and which were switched-live.

How about when I took off my bedroom light once and found four cables of grey rubber. One connected to one terminal in the lamp holder, two twisted together in the other terminal and another one loose on it's own. 
Suffice to say I replaced the whole upstairs light circuit promptly.
