Can anyone help please. We have an inside hall light and want to connect an outside light linked on to this (having the two switches both inside the hall). The switches have common L1 & L2. We know that we have to have a link wire, but seem to have tried every combination without luck. Thanks in advance of some kind soul helping us.

What I suspect you are trying to do is connect the new light fitting directly from the switch terminals.
NO!!!
You have to take a live, neutral and earth feed from the nearest point (hall rose?) and then run a switchwire to the switch position. Do a search, as this exact scenario has come up before. If you get stuck, post back.
