I am replacing my current system with a Hive 2 but am unsure of the wiring sequence if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.
I have a Worcester Bosch Greenstar Ri boiler and a separate hot water tank (gravity fed), I have 4 wires one of which is the earth (I think) the L & N I have connected to 1 & 2 but am not sure where the others go.

It is currently connected to an Inspire Home automation system which works well wired as it is shown in the photo that I have attached. There are 3 connections going into my old unit with the Netral connected on left and what appears to be the earth linked in with the live on second from left and the final cable in the fourth from left (HW on). Any help gratefully received.

Hi Dave

Welcome to the forum, but it's bad news I'm afraid. That is a right mess, one of the worst I have seen! An earth wire is being used as a live conductor, a white(?) wire as a neutral and there is no connection to the right hand CH (Central Heating) connection, so its not controlling your heating at all. What is controlling it now goodness knows. The whole thing needs rewiring properly from scratch IMHO

I agree it’s a mess but that’s what I’ve got to sort out, presumably its the wiring from the boiler to the timer unit that needs checking and changing, I imagine that the colours mean nothing as it all works perfectly and has done for several years. Is it best to get a plumber with electrical experience or an electrician to unravel the “knitting”?

That would be a good idea. Unfortunately without knowing what the other end each of the wires are connected to it would be impossible guess how it is wired. You will also need to find out what is actually controlling your central heating, as you can see from your photograph there are not any wires going to the central heating (CH) terminals, so unless the central heating is incorrectly connected to the hot water (HW) wiring somewhere, something else must be controlling it.
