Wiring doorbell Question

I am attempting to join my doorbell wire which got severed

I have noticed that when i bunch up all the wires (i.e. twist all four wires together) the doorbell works.

Is it okay to do this?

Or do I have to use a connector block to join two wires at a time?

In the end, i plan to stick all the wires in a choc box. However i am curious whether there are any alternatives to this?

Yes, join two wires at a time , otherwise bell will continuously ring!

Initially, i used wago 221's and the bell operated as normal.

I then decided to bunch all the wires up to see what would happen and strangely the doorbell worked as normal too.

However the transformer started humming a bit louder than expected and it got quite hot.

I chalked this up to age so i replaced the transformer. The new transformer is quiet

Any idea why the bell appears to function as normal when bunched together?

The chime i have is wired and also has a battery

That's a great shout regarding the heat shrink.

What diameter is suitable for bell wire please?

Veedee,
Use a roller to see how many mm diameter the outer wire insulation is. And then get the slightly larger size.

This web site (https://cpc.farnell.com/pro-power/bellwirecca/bell-wire-cca-conductor-100m/dp/CB14615) says its bell wire has an insulation diameter of 2.2mm,
So my GUESS is that you need 3mm heat shrink.

To clear up any confusion.... are you saying that 2 wires have been severed leaving you 4 ends and you've wrapped all 4 ends together???

If so, it's shorting out the transformer and explains why it's getting very hot. Bad idea.

I can't explain why the bell still works though, it shouldn't do if the above is true.

Yes, i wrapped up all four wires (for experimental purposes)

And yes, the doorbell still worked

I wil connect two at a time and use the heat shrink as SFK suggested
