Hi, I've no real experience of electrics and looking for some advice on where I'm going wrong with this simple wiring set up for a bathroom extractor. Going from bathroom light switch (pull cord) to isolation switch to a Fantronix (timer) extractor fan. Wired this way the fan does nothing.

Bathroom light has Live (L1) black wire, Neutral (COM) red wire and Earth, yellow and green.

Fantronix extractor requires Neutral (N), Live (L1) and Switched Live (LT)

From light switch to isolation switch I've wired Neutral to neutral, taken two wires from the Live for L1 and L2 to isolation switch then from isolation switch to fan. Is this where I've gone wrong? Taking two wires from the Live and splitting them for L1 and L2?

Appreciate any help or advice

Even if you made the same mistake as lots of people regarding neutrals, you have connected the live wire to the neutral terminal of the fan

Please do not do any more 'electrics' until you have some idea of what you are doing.

As others have pointed out...

Your pull cord switch does not have neutral. The only pre-existing cables in the light pull cord are the live and switched live. On the balance of probability, you need to take your supply from the light fitting. That should have both the permanent live, switched live and the neutral. Given that it seems to be an inline fan I guess that you can run the cable down from the loft to the light ceiling rose/fitting.

The rose (normally has a perm live and neutral running from a light fitting elsewhere). From the fitting, a perm live runs down to the pull cord, the other cable runs back as a switched live

You will then need to run from it it to your isolating switch and back to the extractor.

I understand why the electricians are concerned about your lack of knowledge. I would recommend that it might be prudent to pay someone to wire it for you, but if you are insistent on doing it yourself, I would rather that you understood how the connections work. Look at the following (image number 1)

Hopefully it will explain where the wires should go. If you don't understand, then, yes, please pay someone to fit it for you.

Best o'luck
