Wiring Issue

Breezer, I went to take a live feed from the rose but although there were 3 neutral and 3 earth, there was only one live (switched at that) so I'm not sure what to do next.

I tried to connect my downlighters but of course they would only work when the main light (rose feed) was on.

Any advice?

Years ago, before the modern ceiling rose, it was a case of a 'live' to the switch, followed by a 'switched live to the rose, followed by the wires to and from the lamp, then neutral.
Today it is basically still the same except that the 'live' goes to the rose and from the rose to the switch.
You have the original method and you need to find a permanent live, so you could use the live side of the switch or try tracing the live back from the switch to a position conveinent to break in and fit a juction box
