wiring loop

please help
my son lives in scotland in a flat and i live in spain.
out of ceiling he has 4 black, 1 red, 2 green wires.
new light fitting brown and blue wires.

he tried fitting new light fitting with no joy.
i told him to make a canon light (as in old tv prog)
the light worked
he then connected new fitting and it worked.

i called him tonight and he preceeded to inform me he had no hall
and no kitchen light.
he then added he had spare wires which he didnt use and put
them in an electrical junction box and poked it back up into ceiling.

refer him to the for refernce section there are drawings there, but to be honest i would suggest he call an electrician in this case Unless he vcan identify which black goes where)
