Wood burner placed to deep into old fireplace

We had a wood burner installed in an existing fireplace last fall. Although it does give us some heat I feel as if it was placed to far back into the existing "hole" and mostly heats up the stone walls of said "hole".
There is a good 30 cm of hearth in front of the stove which is also the front edge of the" hole".
Would it heat the room more efficiently if it was moved forward?

What kind of stone "walls"?
Who installed the stove? Was it a HETAS?
What make and size stove is it?
Does the stove have a flue liner?
How did you previously heat the room?

The old chimney orifice must be closed off using a register plate, through which the stove flue pipe passes.
The register plate needs to be sealed at the edges. If this has been done, no heat will escape up the chimney.
Moving the stove forward won't have much effect, and will need a new flue pipe, more than likely.
Have you considered using an Eco fan, which sits on the top of the stove?

Would like to see this. There's some right bodges out there when it comes to stove fitting and yours sounds like one of them.

Same as John, sit an eco fan on top, it will throw the heat out.

An ecofan is 250mm high. Probably no space for the device.

If the stove has 30cm from the face to the front of the opening then its needs moving to allow proper access.

If its a boiler stove then there may be other issues. Crappy make, undersized or the hydronic's set up incorrectly.
