Wood burner with back boiler. What am I doing wrong?

I moved into a rented house 2 years ago. They have a wood burner with back boiler and the way the landlord talked about the system you’d think there was no better system in the entire planet. Was told we were only allowed to burn wood (it is a multi fuel stove, confirmed by the sweep).

Burnt briquettes up til now but have had to switch to coal as it’s too expensive. Last night I couldn’t get the heating to come one for more than 10 minutes at a time. I’m burning anthracite and had it glowing red hot.

Any suggestions?

If you don't know the make and model of your stove, post some photos.

Is there a pump? Is there a thermostat? What do you mean by "more than 10 minutes?" Do you mean the fire went out? What was "glowing red hot?"

Anthracite glows red hot because it is a smokeless fuel. It doesn't produce 'flames', which ate wasted heat.
I imagine the heating switches off because the heat from the anthracite is enough to trigger the thermostat. (Just guessing on that one).
