I was painting the porch and I found that the cross beam upon which the slate roof rests is very rotted at one end. See here

What can I do? Could I cut the beam and rejoin it to a new section with metal braces holding them together? Cost?[/url]

It appears to be only wet rot and will not spread to other timbers.
If you rectify the cause of the moisture ingress it will not get any worse.
The rot appears to be on the upper edge of the wall plate and on the birdsmouth of the rafter were it sits on the wall plate.
From what I can see I would reinforce the affected rafter by fixing a new section on the inside seated on the wall plate and make good the decayed wall plate using epoxy resin. You can buy this from most of the main diy sheds
If you really want you can apply a preservative to the affected timbers but its not really necessary
