Wood finish for stairs with runner

We've just lifted the old carpet on the stairs, and will be putting in a runner. Our original plan was to just paint the stairs the same colour as the skirting/woodwork, however the wood looks pretty good, so I'm keen to keep it unpainted. Just not sure how to best tidy it up and finish it?

I was thinking of sanding it down a little and then waxing(?), but no idea where to start so would appreciate some suggestions please! Photo below.

A couple of coats of Danish oil would look great.
