Wood lice and Slugs in my kitchen!

I've lived in my house for three years and we often see earwigs and slugs crawling across the kitchen floor. (I say often - probably a 1 a week - but of course we don't know what goes on in the night or under the units!)

I can't see any holes/gaps where they're coming in from.

Someone told me this is a sign of damp - any opinions greatfully received.

Check to make sure there are no gaps around the wastepipe outlets for the kitchen. Do you have any airbricks or catflaps? they could come through these. Do you have woodlice as well, they are a sign of damp conditions? Check under the sink unit and remove the kick boards in the kitchen and have a good look. Earwigs can come in in flower heads, have you picked any from the garden lately?

did you count the number of legs to make sure it was a milipede, and not a centipede?

try a "google" sounds a bit specialist as to where they live

There's no need to count legs. A centipede won't hang around long enough anyway. The vegetarian millipede moves slowly; the carnivorous centipede moves like greased lightning. This is the reasoning behind the gardener's old adage, "If you can catch it kill it".

Woodlice do need damp conditions but the damp might not be anywhere that matters to you. They will come in from your garden or from the subfloor space if you have one. Despite their name they are harmless and do not eat your wood. They feed on rotting organic matter so check the kitchen bin.
