Am rebuilding my kitchen and am considering options for the splashback/wall behind the main run of units - a 630mm deep worktop which includes the hob. One of the options I'm thinking about is painted wood paneling. Would this be ok if I were to attach a clear glass splashback on top of paneling behind the hob?

I don't think that a painted wooden splashback makes a good choice. IMHO it will be an absolute pain to keep clean unless it is all protected by glass or acrylic

What would be the point of painted panelling if you are putting glass in front, would look weird and chances are grease and dust would get behind leaving it looking grubby

The paneling would cover a 3m long wall, from worktop height to ceiling (1.5m). The glass would only cover a small area behind the cooker to protect the wood from heat.

I don't see a problem. The area behind the hob would be protected. In fact, for the last 12 years the wall has been emulsion painted plaster, with no issues. Just wipe it clean every so often as you would do with tiles.
