Hello,

I've got a large Cheminee Phillippe insert woodburner which doesn't seem to be drawing well. I took the cast iron baffle plate off to have a look at the flue to find that there is another plate between the baffle and the flue - ceramic and it's removable. Question is: Does it need to be there? Ican't see what its for apart from blocking the flue from rain water etc. We've just moved into this property so have no idea of how old the burner is etc although the insulation surrounding it looks relatively new.

Any insights appreciated! Thanks

First thing to do, is get the chimney swept; it may just be blocked. If there's a baffle in the top, it'll be to reflect the heat back into the combustion chamber.

Here's the Cheminee website. Find the instructions for your stove, and make sure you've got the controls set properly.

With some Morso stoves, this baffle mustn't be used if the flue exit is at the rear. For a usual top exit, it reduces the updraught through the stove, presumably making it more efficient.
They are notorious for collecting soot there and should be checked twice yearly......the chimney should be swept yearly too.

Swept twice a year .....before and after the heating season .......and get a certificate.

If you don't do that and have a chimney fire your house structure insurance wont pay out !
