I would like to construct a simple wooden door canopy for a backdoor. Rather than just purchase a pre manufactured one I would like to build it myself, simply for the self satisfaction and also I have a variety of left over pieces of timber that I have collected over the years. The only issue is I cannot find any designs or plans. Can anyone recommend a website where I can download one. I have searched on Google & Yahoo and also a variety of DIY websites but to no avail.

There’s a very good reference library that is stored inside the old grey matter, combine this with that new invention called a camera and before long you will have your very own design. The result will not only be a canopy constructed by you, but also designed by you to your own individual requirements.

Or are you willing to accepted some one else design that you will need adapt to suite your needs, but you can always blame the designer if the project goes belly up.

flat roof or pitched?

either way start with a pair of gallows securely fixed to the masonry, either side of the door.

next fix a sheet of ply to the topside of the gallows as this will form the ceiling, which can either be painted or cladded.

you can then start carcassing the roof to either flat or pitched specifications.

if you require an open ceiling ignore the ply bit. ;)

I'll replay for hovis :) as i am after the same advice! (Hope he ok and not done him self a mischief)

Can you buy those gallows pre made?

Also i am sure i have seen these but maybe my brain made them up, but can you get sheets of fake tiles, by which i mean something plastic that snap together and looks like slate/roof tiles.

If i post some pics of the area, could you advice me on what style would suite?

Thanks (and i'll promise i'll replay) :)
