Worried about smell - can anyone help?

Hi,

I've very recently had work done at home (by builders) which involved replacing the sink in the kitchen amongst other things. When fitting the sink I believe the wrong waste pipe was delivered and for a day the pipes werent connected. The smell was really bad - very sulpury/eggy - and I understand this may be gas direct from the sewer usually blocked by water in the u bend. The sink is now apparently fixed but even when fixed yesterday, last night the smell was quite strong despite the window being open and today on arrival home the real eggy smell has gone replaced by a sort of spent match smell, which I guess could also be described as sulphur like. It's a much less unpleasent smell, but still a smell and this is with the window open.

Is this something to be concerned about - surely the smell should have gone now the pipes are fixed?

Were there any electrics that could have been damaged in the area?

No, the pipes are all in a cupboard under the sink and there are no electrics in there. There's a washing machine next to the cupboard but not connected in any way or likely to be affected.

Have they left you a connection for your washing machine outlet this could have been left open or if it is a washing machine upstand with the trap at hhe bottom pour some water down to fill the trap

Indeed, the traps have to have water in them for them to work.

You wouldn't, but have you used the sink or washing machine since the plumber has been?

Does the washing machine or dishwasher go into a connection under the sink or does it go into a long tube?

I have briefly used the sink but not the washing machine. I'm reasonably sure the washing machine pipe connects under the sink with the pipes.

I cant see the back of the machine as it's under a work surface and the builders moved it into place and presumably connected it.

Unless you've been told not to..put the washing machine on a quick rinse.
