Hi folks, see below a rough (very rough lol) diagram of the terrace of houses in the street we live. Our house is the end house which has the porch and door to the side, unlike the other houses which have the porch and door at the front. Our rear door (patio window) is in the same place as other houses in the street. Green outline is the front and rear gardens.

If we wanted to extend where the patio window is currently, for the purposes of a Permitted Development, would this be classed as a rear or a side extension?

At the front of the houses (bar ours) is the street, to the side (where our front door is) is a field, and to the rear is a field.

Also would a L shape from the rear to the porch likely be permitted?

Edit: Just to add, the porch is an original feature of the house.

The front of a house is the principal elevation that fronts the highway. The "front door" of a house does not have to be in the front of the house.

Assuming that you are not on a corner plot then an extension by the patio doors would be considered a rear extension, whilst an extension by the entrance porch would be considered a side extension.

If you are on a corner plot it gets a little more complicated and we'd need to see pictures of the building in context.

The liklihood of obtaining planning permission is subject to a lot of individual factors. But in the first instance you may want to do some research into your "permitted development rights", as these will allow you to do some things without needing to ask permission. Essentially, you are permitted to do certain types of developments and the council cannot stop you - though it is wise to have them check that your proposals do fall within your rights (called a Certificate of Lawful Development application).
