Wylex consumer Unit

MCB 1 has a 30 amp rating and is not being used i.e. no wires connected.

Can it be simply unscrewed (as it appears to be held in by 2 screws top and bott (NSB Type 2) and replaced with a 45 amp MCB to connect a shower to? or does the part behind that it screws into (where the wire connects) need to be changed/upgraded also?

Also noticed some on ebay listed as Type B are these compatible or must it say Type 2?

Isolate the consumer unit then remove 32a MCB having:-

Taken out the copper strap that links live (or should I say phase ) to all the mcb's at the bottom.

Use a screw driver to pull the locking latch at the base of the MCB and the mcb is now out.

Replace with 45A MCB and working in reverse order- clip MCB in, refit the copper bar / strap and make sure each mcb in the chain is fully tightened on to the bar.

Test new circuit per dead testing sequence, commission circuit, do live tests, complete MWC or EIC.

Is it an elder board?

Type B are standard MCB's

Re:Isolation, should be done at the cu via main switch off and at the service head via switch / and or main fuse.

The job really shouldn't be done by someone without the knowledge to do so, and if isolation is done via the fuse at the head you could get a slap from the DNO when they notice the seal is broken.

It is a wylex with NSB Type 2 MCBs

You are correct about the copper stripp holding them in at the bottom.

If I read you correctly the whole row have to be unscrewed at the bottom to allow the copper strip to be lowered to allow an mcb to be removed/inserted.

Problem is the first one I have tried to unscrew wont budge and the screw is rounding off they are that tight.
There is a spare slot to insert a new MCB but without removing the screws to remove the copper bar it doesnt appear possible to slot one in.[/img]

How do I tell if its an old board? The only form of ID I can find is

Cat No NSSTM5404-899

The MCBs are all marked NSB Type 2

If 40 amp is the max this board will take would that be enough for a 8.5kw shower? And where could I get one?

Some older Wylex units, have a type of drop-in MCB, where loosening the bottom screw, allows the MCB to slot straight onto the din-rail and busbar simultaneously, without disturbing its neighbours. (My old home has one like that), once that is done and the breaker secured, you can connect the outgoing phase wire to the top of the breaker, and proceed with the circuit.
(subject to testing and certification etc).
