I have used a Ronseal Medium Oak gloss varnish – they are now far too yellow and I wanted to know how to get them back to the vintage oak finish i wanted without having to re-sand etc.?? Many thanks in advance…

heeellloooo twinxy and welcome :D :D :D
thats why trying on a hidden area or scrap first is a good idea ;)

unfortunatly it will show through
if you use a darker varnish to try and cover it you will finnish up with a colour somwhere in between but less off the natural wood grain showing through

on top of that the natural wood will tone down and get darker over the comming months and years plus-------
if its oil based it will also yellow over time

so the choice is yours cover with a different colour and hope for the best

or strip and have another go [keeping in mind about yellowing and ageing] ;)

dam that trying a patch first - that was all i could bloody hear in my sleep last night!

I thought i would have to sand them all back again! - but i may give the darker varnish a go - any reccomendations please!

we are all learning - some of us more than others though!!!!!!!!

dark oak and deep mahogany is brown based,
mahogany is reddy brown based

medium oak or pine are yellow based
cherry is a pinky red

beech is a pinky yellow colour

the only way you will know is to try on a sample
buy the 2 coulours that you think will work best try a small area [keeping the tin clean  ]

if you dont like them take them back and exchange for another 2

now i personaly think you wont be happy till "roar "off the belt sander has finnished

Thanks for your advice - i personally think it's going to have to be the sander / stain and wax job - dam short cuts never pay off!!!!!
