my washing machine does not drain completely - there is always about 1 pint of water left if I drain it from the filter drain. The result is I get stinky water making my next wash smelly - even if I drain it this way

any ideas?

The water in your filter is coming from the water trap. It's meant to be there, it's to prevent bad smells coming from your drains back into your machine.
