built in sat nav -advice please

Hi

I own a 2005 Honda CR-V which has a built in sat nav/radio/cd. Recently I have been getting the dreaded 'disc reading error' on screen which means that the nav will not boot up for ages (if at all). I've been on to the Honda owners forum and have found that this a very common error and means that the unit will have to be dismantled and the lens cleaned.

The unit is made by Alpine and appears in other makes of car apart from Hondas.

Has anyone attempted to dismantle and clean the lens and was it sucessful?

If I bought an updated dvd would it work?

I was thinking of blasting it with a can of compressed air first- where can I buy this?

Any advice would be appreciated.

i would take it to a specialist stereo shop, i took an alpine unit apart many years ago to clean it and it never worked the same again!

have you tried a lens cleaner?
unless you already know,but try the forum again just incase it is a hidden slot behind some of the trim,as is the sat nav system on alot of fords.

You can get the Alpine units fixed by Dtronix for a fixed price. Here's some advice I posted for someone else:

I went on the Alpine website and called the telephone number listed for repairs. The lady told me to send it to them at Cannons Road and she called me back a week later to say it was repaired. I don't have her name I'm sorry.

just as a follow-up to my original post..... I bought a can of compressed air and blasted the whole contents of the can into the cd slot. Although it occasionally is a bit slow starting up, so far, it's been working pretty well.
