Noggins or Herringbone struts

All,

Our upstairs floor does not feel stable under foot (3m span) and removing the ceiling downstairs for another job I found there are no noggins or struts between the joists. Am I best to install solid noggins or steel herringbone struts? I cannot install the struts on top of the joists as the flooring has not been removed above. Can I nail the struts to the side of the joists.

Solid noggins

make wooden ones and screw to the face

metal ones will probably just bend/flex with movement if nailed to the face
noggins will only work if you can square up the timbers or cut them individually to fit

If you only have access from bellow, noggins cut to a snug fit.

And dont forget that noggings or herringbone are useless without folding wedges between the last joist and wall.

What section size are the joists?

Where the joists sit in the bearing wall pockets are they firmly wedged-in? ie. they dont spring up, even a small amount.

I intend fitting these after the roof it on and the timber has had chance to shrink as much as it wants to. Is that about right?

No. T&G chipboard produces squeaky floors as well as poorly fitted floorboards and poorly fitted plumbing.
