Guess what flew over our place today!

Some years ago i went to the RIAT at Mildenhall, it was a horrible misty/murky/drizzly sort of day and no good at all for airshows but i perceivered, we were sat in my car due to the weather, anyway this B-1 raptor bomber did a very low fly by - i don't know 500ft possibly and as it came by a great big mushroom appeared behind it like in the pic below, i'll never forget it because i thought the windows were going in on the car they vibrated that much it was as though they were plastic

I very much doubt it broke the sound barrier, that would be a huge no no. That is most probably a dense con trail.

I very much doubt it too, i don't think the organisers would approve and i know for a fact the pilot would be hung drawn and quartered by his superiors if he did but all i know is i saw this mushroom appear and disappear a few times as it came past, the front windows were down on my car a few inches as it was steaming up with the weather and 4 people in there and its where i saw the glass edge wobble a good inch side to side, i was fully expecting all my windows to pop, it was awesome!!!

If this mushroom thingy only appears upon breaking the sound barrier well that bomber was doing it albeit on and off so i assume he was on the threshold

Ah I've got it now - it was thrust vectoring :?:

Just a high speed pass with wing vapour.Thrust vectoring is a different thing entirely(which the lancer hasn't got).F-22 raptor has thrust vectoring nozzles and often shows lots of wing vapour in it's display http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cveuX0o9_c[/QUOTE]

I don't know my planes but is a Lancer a B-1 raptor? It was defo a B-1 that i saw do this and i remember because i have a Breitling B-1 so when they announced the B-1 over the PA i took interest just to see which plave my watch was named after, my vid shows a B-1 raptor and its doing exactly in the vid that i saw the one do at Mildenhall

Incidentally if you own a Breitling your allowed into the breitling marquee with all the VIP's and pilots, the doormen check your wrist as you walk up up, me and a mate walked up to one with the view to walk in and see what was in there.....ha ha he got turned away while i had the door opened for me ;)

No,B1 is a lancer not a raptor and not sure RIAT has ever been held at mildenhall?it's usually raf fairford.

It would of been the late 90's because of the car I had at the time, my Volvo 850R, it was defo mildenhall but I could be mistaken about it being the RIAT but could of sworn it was

Im plainly spoilt living in lincolnshire

I see the red arrows almost daily doing their routines, have fast jets buzz our house, the lanc does a fly by every year over our house as we live next to an old WW2 airfield, have been to the BBMF a few times, in fact every day is like an airshow here

Petit, where in Lincolnshire is the best place to see these displays?
Thinking of a camping holiday next year and the thought of seeing these regularly sounds good.

Hi Conny, you may like to see this show, the aircraft are no longer airworthy but a great spectacle as they disappear down the runway in full reheat.

That's interesting. It looks like they use only one engine. Then again, if they used both with reheat I suppose they'd have a hell of a job stopping before the end of the runway.

Talking of which, I wonder how a Lightning would perform on takeoff with only one engine. I bet it would still leave many modern planes standing.

Very impressive to see an aircraft of that size do a roll on takeoff, although I seem to recall the pilot got a kick up the ar$e for doing it!

Same here, I forget how lucky I am having all this on our doorstep, it's just commonplace and something I've grown up with. I was at a vintage working day two weeks ago opposite the BBMF which was having the end of season show. Spits, lancs, hurricaines and a daccota going up and down all day over a field of vintage tractors ploughing made for some cracking pictures.
