Sentinel X400

click on my earlier link it states that it can be left in the system and the manufacturer recommends adding their own brands for corrosion prevention

Have to disagree with that.

Read the fact sheet again.

It can be left in - yes, time unlimited. "There is no limit to the time for which the product can safely be left in the system" a the fact sheet states.

BUT if using other products, it has to be flushed out. "Flush the system before refilling and treating with Sentinel X100 inhibitor or Sentinel X500 inhibited antifreeze", again as the fact sheet says.

There is nothing about leaving it in the system AND adding other products at the same time.

If you don't drain it out, and flush, then all the sludge is still in the system and will eventually settle again as the X400 loses its power over time, so you were wasting your time putting it in. AFAICT the manufacturers mean that it will not actually cause any additional damage if you leave it in, though.

however...

if you have an effective system filter in place, it will trap some, or perhaps all, of the circulating particles in time, before the X400 deteriorates.

I have sometimes thought it would be worth adding some to the system, after you have already cleaned and flushed it and added a filter, if it the system is dirty and old. However I have seen a more recent product intended for that very purpose, X900, that would doubtless be more suitable.

Exactly John!

The whole point of adding it in the first place is to bring the dirt into suspension to enable it to be flushed out !

Except in special cases where the pipework is very delicate, there is little application for X400 ( except to bide ones time when very busy.

X800 is stronger and will do the same job in four hours!

In reply to your original question before the drama queens started

Adding a small amount will do no good to aid your circulation

It has to be drained out (in Theory) to remove the magnatite that will be in soloution then refilled with inhibitor

If you wish to add anything and leave it in there add X100

Have you a problem with circulation

Yes can be left in at no detriment to the system however as time goes by the detergents will loose there effectiveness and all benefit of it being in there is lost, any of the previously suspended magnetite/sludge will no longer be suspended and thus not able to be removed by dropping the system water. That's what I think

so, Claude, we keep coming back to the same question.

The purpose of X400 (and X900) is to loosen the dirt so that it can be removed by flushing (or trapping in a filter)

Are you going to remove the dirt that is loosened? If not, you are wasting your time and money.

Yes John.
Had a theory of drip feeding the system X400, and catching the moving particles in my TF1!
Really just wanted to know if this is a viable technique, and if so what quantities of X400 to add.

Never knew you had a filter fitted

Chuck an X900 in and let it do its stuff ............ been using it for about 3 months and so far quite impressed

If you want to use X400 with a filter (I did) chuck it all in, and let the pump, at full speed, flow through one rad at a time, closing the others. You will have to empty the filter quite often, but you will be amazed and delighted at how much it catches. When you put it back into normal service, check the filter every week, then every month, then six months, then once a year and you will find the amount of particles drops away rapidly. If you are obsessive you can let it settle in a jam-jar and see how much you get (when it dries, it shrinks).

I still think you would clean it more quickly by doing a clean, drain, and rinse. If you've already done that, go straight to X900 but I understand it is an (even) milder cleaner.

If you are in a hard water area, you can add X200, but do it in the summer when the rads are closed, so it is more concentrated in the boiler until the following winter.
