Constant Water Trickling Down Toilet Bowl (Inside)

Hi, just to inform everyone on the Wirquin / Jolly Flush type of valves. The problem is that the silicone rubber seal soon fails, we are talking only a few weeks. What happens is the seal perishes very quickly, it starts to bubble up and then the slow leaking begins inside the toilet bowl, wasting your water. I have now replaced 3 such Wirquin silicone rubber seals and they all went the same way, failing after
about 6 weeks. I will provide a photo of the perished seal. I will soon be replacing this useless Wirquin flush valve for something more reliable and will post an update to my solution.

Ok, having considered my solution. I have decided to go with a dual flush flapper type of valve, I will fit this today and if it goes wrong I will post here again. No further comments from myself will mean this flapper is good. Picture added of the exact item I'm using, the fluidmaster 507UKK073 dual flush flapper:

I'm having the usual problem of constant water flow into the pan with this unit. The Wd40 solution worked for a while but now I need to remove the "big white thingy" to get a better look at things. I have tried turning it the recommended 1/4 turn (anti-clockwise?) but it only moves a tiny amount. Just how much force do I need to apply before I wreck it?

what exactly are you referring to? Do you have a brand name? Can you post a pic before you wreck anything?

Sorry. I was picking up on the original subject of this thread, ie the MacDee unit, and all the relevant subsequent postings. I hope that puts this in perspective in relation to my previous posting. If not, let me know and I'll spell everything out. The previous photos refer too.

So you have a "MacDee unit" thats giving you difficulties. But you dont give a context or a pic of your situation - is the WC accessible? Does your WC supply have an isolator?

Why not ask the mods to start you a new thread?

I'm sorry that I do not appear to be making myself very clear. The problem I have is that water is constantly running into the pan from the cistern. This is the problem that first kicked off this thread so I am just trying to pick up all the relevant information from here without starting all over again from scratch and repeating what is already here. But if it would be better to start a new thread so be it; I will be happy to take advice on that from more experienced users than me.

The "MacDee unit" I refer to is the one that is pictured in the various photos in this thread, ie the one with the cable running into it from the press button on top of the cistern,the Macdee AFV40100 flush valve.

As I said I have tried lubricating the cable with WD40 which worked for a while. I now want to get at the innards of the valve, sometimes referred to as the "big white thingy", which I learned is achieved by turning the valve 1/4 way round (I now see it is anti-clockwise turn). It does not turn although it is not fixed and allows very slight movement, and I do not want to use excessive pressure if it will damage the valve. So, I suppose my question is simply should I be prepared to use a fair amount of force to turn this unit. I have not seen any reference to any clips or anything that might need to be released prior to attempting to turn the valve.

The WC is fully accessible and there is an isolation valve, which I have turned off.

Probably needless to say but I am not very experienced at plumbing.

Have a DIY go or get a plumber to change the works to a Fluidmaster fill valve and a Fluidmaster flush valve and save any future aggravation.

Bought a Fluidmaster valve at Toolstation (just over £10), examined to make certain how it fitted together, forced out the old valve (clockwise, not anti-clockwise), replaced with new, tested, it worked. 10 minutes tops, no plumber.

iIf anybody is interested the white thing in the fluidmaster 4550074 dual flushing valve complete with bottom inlet valve is a perfect fit for the one in macdee afv40100. 20 quid from b+q. there are some other fluidmaster kits with the same number which i havent tried.

The trick for removing white thingy is hold in near top when turning. forceful but not super forceful. if you turn too far or too little it won't lift. Jiggle it a bit helps

Thanks to @RDD and everyone who chipped in...reaching forward through time and [cyber]space to help me with my AFV40100.
For what it's worth, my problem seems to have been the cable not moving freely through the tube. Probably a bit of corrosion / gunk building up on one end or the other. The application of WD40 and a bit of a clean have done the trick.

Well mine been leaking water down the back of the pan So my bodge to get it working again. Was to
Lift off the lid on the big white thingy. And. Put a big. Nut and bolt. Down inside the plunger tube to give it some weight. I've left the. Lid off. As it won't go back on with the bolt sticking out. But it works fine. 30 second fix
