dont forget the numbers that you are talking about is not working at present the total that has broke /stopped working at sometime will be 3 or times as many as this if not higherNot really, the 'not working' includes all varieties of 'not working', even an IHD, which might not be able to connect to the HAN, simply because of distance, thick walls or other similar issues, as well as inability to communicate data back to the supplier regularly. So the difference between the smart, and the dumb is zilch, for that last example - the customer has to report readings, for both.
Hence, it's not really anywhere near as bad, as the headline numbers might at first suggest, just the silly people in this thread, (deliberately) misunderstanding the reports, with an agenda.
Also when a smart gas meter goes they sometimes have to change the electric one as well as they are now not compatible so a non job in the past becomes a relatively expensive one with the costs added to everyones bills
