Panorama - The Smart Meter mess

Not really, the 'not working' includes all varieties of 'not working', even an IHD, which might not be able to connect to the HAN, simply because of distance, thick walls or other similar issues, as well as inability to communicate data back to the supplier regularly. So the difference between the smart, and the dumb is zilch, for that last example - the customer has to report readings, for both.

Hence, it's not really anywhere near as bad, as the headline numbers might at first suggest, just the silly people in this thread, (deliberately) misunderstanding the reports, with an agenda.
dont forget the numbers that you are talking about is not working at present the total that has broke /stopped working at sometime will be 3 or times as many as this if not higher
Also when a smart gas meter goes they sometimes have to change the electric one as well as they are now not compatible so a non job in the past becomes a relatively expensive one with the costs added to everyones bills

Then do what the responsible energy customers do, pay your bills when they are due, and you will avoid being cut off..
It’s not black and white. Stop pretending it is.

But at the point of disconnecting a supply, it’s a doddle with a SM. No site visit needed!!!

Harry is either trying to be a Troll or isn’t seeing the full picture.

I get constant phone calls from So energy trying to get me to have a smart meter….if they are for my benefit why are they pushing it so hard?

I think the smart meter industry is shambolic, it’s close to a scam.

Harry, I think we all know I usually disagree with Gas112 and Nwgs2, but they are both experienced professionals in the industry, I think we should pay heed to their judgement on this.

The concept of smart meters is good, but personally I don’t want my energy being cut off because the damn think has a glitch during a firmware update or something.

My gas meter has some numbers and a big lever next to it….not much to wrong (touches wood)

And there is the bit that denso is struggling with he thinks that cadent engineers etc working on them can sort these very very frequent glitches that turns them off . Sometimes needing a manual reset afterwards .
And with suppliers taking up to a few days to get out to them just what you need in the depth of winter

My recollection of the TV program doesn't include broken meters only comms not working. It suggested Scotland was a particular problem but here is me, B'ham and mine are not working as well. The fitter muttered that they were not working when he fitted them. General or just me - I don't know.

Customer gains having one Dubious in terms of reducing power usage. That is more related to what people power up even which items they buy. Energy ratings etc. Heating is on when people use it. Dropping the set temperature reduces cost but only to what it turns out to be and what T people can cope with. Boilers and houses vary.

Main gain is with the suppliers. Meter readings. It may make billing more accurate - if they work.

:( What a time to tell me that we have no electricity this coming Monday. Off nearly all day. Great time of the year for that.

Which I've never claimed.

Cadent need to be more sympathetic and have procedures in place for smart meters. Assist the customer rather than refuse to "work" on them. Customer service was never their strong point.

Bit of a pass. The 2 engineers that were around when mine was fitted both live locally. Not sure why a 2nd one came briefly as both ok with all gas and electric work.

Some work done by a gas person resulted in a leak. Fixed quickly.

Well it turned out EXACTLY as I called it - let me remind you what I said 24 hours ago.
Something I have noticed about this debate, we have 2 of the 3 stooges doing their usual routine together but where is the 3rd one - notch. He has not stepped a foot in here, my guess is because he agrees that SM are a bad idea but doesn't want to to be seen to be "batting for the wrong side"

And low and behold ----
