Afternoon all,
I'm looking for some advice on how to increase the side of my fireplace. However looking up my chimney the stack takes a 45 ish angle towards the right.
How would I go about raising the height of my fireplace opening? As I see it I'd be able to raise the front of the fireplace...
Hi everyone
I’m building a stud wall fireplace this weekend and will be using 3x2 timber, unless it’s preferable to use 4x2 which I have also read is commonly used.
if using 3x2, what size screws are best for this? Diameter and length please.
Cheers
I am going to replace carpet with engineered wooden floor. I have removed a massive hearth around the fireplace and left with a recess which goes down to concrete beams (no screed). I can level this part with a bed of mortar to align with the rest of the floor but my question is:
- should I lay...
We’re in the process of opening up a redundant fireplace in our bedroom
The original chimney breast was hidden behind a stud wall and we basically want to open it back up with a vent in the flue and re-fit a cast iron front so it looks the part but doesn’t need to function.
Peeling back the...
I recently bought a Victorian end of terrace and over lockdown have gradually been making progress with restoring it.
We ripped up the carpets in the dining room and noticed the floor boards were in a bit of a state, with some breaking away. I should also add we had the house re-wired and...
Ugh. Am selling my house and solicitor asked if I have a HETAS certificate for a fireplace installed in 2009. I paid a high street fireplace shop to install a cast iron insert and slate hearth into an empty fireplace opening in my Victorian terrace. I got a guarantee but it doesn't mention...
Hi there.
Looking for some advice, I've opened up a builders opening to it's original 1911 spec, due to the many different fireplaces over the years, the lintels installed by gas fitters have chewed up some of the column bricks, left side being the worst.
I've done a a fair bit myself...
Evening all,
So I'm currently renovating the living room in our victorian end terrace.
As part of this, I've removed the old gas fireplace that we never used, and have built the chimney breast out about 40mm in order to provide some more depth for alcove bookcases.
I'm now working on...
We are in the process of opening up our fireplace in our 1930’s semi, we have a large arch higher up the wall, so need to install a lintel lower down for the new opening. However, when taking out the builders rubble we have found some very messy and disorganised brickwork we would like to...
Hi. I am wanting to level the floor where I will be installing a multi-fuel stove on a hearth. The depth in the opening is approx 2-3cm and then surrounding area is the depth of parquet flooring approx 1cm. Was thinking of a mix of sharp sand and cement for the deeper bit (that maybe exposed to...
We are renovating an upstairs room in our 1903 home and found a hidden fireplace under the lino. It is made of ceramic tiles on top of a clay like material.
Ignore the hardboard fragment on top - that's going too ;-)
My main question is there anything for me to look out for other than remove...
hi all. We live in a long detached house built in the 60s. There were 2 chimneys when we moved in last year, the one for the old boiler which was sat in the kitchen has been completely removed since we had the boiler replaced and relocated. We now want to completely remove the large fireplace in...
Hello!
I've opened up a fireplace am now wondering what to do about the arch, have never posted in a forum before but this seems like the ideal time to start!!
I'm trying to open up and old Victorian Fireplace that was plasterboard over, thought this would be simple, but it looks like the...
I am reinstating a decorative cast iron fireplace and tiled hearth in our bedroom in a Victorian terrace. I've removed the plaster from the chimney breast and exposed the builders opening. I'm now wondering what to do with the hearth...
- It seems like a layer of concrete over rubble, then what...
Hi,
I have just removed a 1950s concrete fireplace and found a back boiler & damper behind. Can I remove this myself? It looks easy enough to remove the bricks etc. I dont want to fit a stove or anything. I would just like it to be opened up. Any advice appreciated. Picture attached of the...
The wife wants me to change our fireplace from stone to contemporary. I was thinking of using Vermiculite Fire Resistant Board with a metal fire trim. Also, knocking the stones forming the arch out to give the opening more height. I assume there's a lintel above the arch somewhere, probably...
Hi
Just about to start the fire for the winter in new old bungalow - noticed protruding rope in surround, and some suspect possible asbestos board up in chimney...
Likely going to get a sample and get it tested... but what do you all think? Might be hard to get a sample for the upper chimney...
I have a wood burning stove which is efficient and does a good job of heating the home. I recently posted a new thread about installing another one in the kitchen -- reason being we have access to free timber (living near a furniture-making town).
I have been offered a white limestone surround...
Hi there all, I bought a semi detached 1930s house about 1 y and a half ago. In the living r room there used to be a fireplace breast on the party wall which was removed years ago. The first floor breast and stack are still there. When i was buying the house there was a damp in the area and The...
We're in the process of installing a stove in the dining room of our Victorian semi. Having removed the plasterboard from the opening and plaster around it, there's clearly been some infill bricks added and a new, small concrete lintel.
We would like to open it to it's original dimensions, to...
