I am in the middle of a refurb and I have taken down the plasterboard ceilings in the rooms on the top floor of my house in order to access cabling routes and get rid of an ugly artex problem. I would like to take the opportunity to put some Rockwool in the ceiling before I put up new...
Hi there,
let me just start by saying I am no plumber or expert and am looking for some advice on doing my first 'big' DIY project of turning a small bedroom into a bathroom, specifically with the toilet.
I want to put the toilet below the window on an external wall which is upstairs and...
Hi,
I am in the process of renovating a home gym where I live and i really want to plaster board this ceiling and remove the central beam to make it a flat surface.
Does anyone know if I would be ok to take this beam out? The width is 4 meters and its a flat roof with felt on it.
thanks,
Hello All,
I am building a workshop, the plan was for 8m x 5m which planning & building regulation granted permission. But would like to have more space and build it bigger.
The new plans will be for 10m x 7m.
I am stuck on the flat roof design, any advice is greatly appreciated.
How should...
Hi,
For an outbuilding, we have 9inch (220mm) roof joists and 4in (100mm) insulation and 18mm OSB3 boards for a warm flat roof.
Based on this I think I will need at least 340mm Fascia boards - but I can't seem to find any; most seem to go up to 225mm only..
I was planning on using 18m fascia...
Hello
Please excuse this newbie question, but I'd like to replace the gravel/ballast on my garage roof which is flat with a slight slope.
The smallest gravel they sell at my local DIY is 10mm pea shingle, but the gravel I am replacing is much smaller, here is a photo comparing each of them...
I'm reroofing a porch roof, approx 3 square metres. Planning on 18mm ply (joists are sound) with EPDM on top.
Is it worth spending time and money getting firestone rubbercover, or would something generic like 1.1mm EPDM with adhesive from rubber4roofs be as good?
Looking for advice please. I've got a flat roof single storey bathroom that needs a new roof and I've looked at GRP Fibreglass as the route to go down. I also wanted to insulate the flat roof and have read all the advice stating that a warm roof is superior to a cold roof. If the Celotex for the...
Hi all, I have a wall that is above a flat roof extension, the flat roof is felted and gravelled, I have to remove some very poor mortaring from the brickwork, the mortar will eventually need removing as it is a different colour to the rest of the mortar but for now all I have to do is remove...
One of the many little gems I've come across when renovating my house is that my flat roof is a cold roof - the insulation sits directly upon the plasterboard with a gap above between the insulation and actual roof.
I'm contemplating converting this to a warm roof as I may as well do it now...
Hi All
I am looking to buy a semi-detached property which currently has a rear ground floor extension (extension also goes slightly down one side of the house) and as the roof needs re-felting etc. I would like to know/clarify whether changing this roof to a pitched roof would require Planning...
Hi, hope I have posted in this in the right section of the forum..
i'm getting a loft conversion built - the builder has put 25mm of insulation above the joists and 120mm inbetween the joists in the flat roof. he's said this makes it a warm roof therefore it doesnt need any ventilation..
is...
Hi all,
We are having a single story extension built. The house was originally built as one of a pair of similar properties in the late 70s. Our neighbours already have a single story extension with a flat roof and parapets. Due to this, we opted to go for the same style of extension to keep...
My wife has very kindly volunteered me to replace my mother in laws flat roof. Last year one of her neighbours was doing some painting outside and it appears he damaged the roof (which I'm guessing was already rotten).
So my plan is to remove the existing felt and ply and replace in reverse...
Hi Everyone,
First post so please be kind :-)
Seeking some advice to change my corrugated roof to a flat felt system. My garage is joined to the neighbours.
Currently the plan is to remove the roofing sheets, add a new lintel over the garage opening, add strengthing battons every 4ft to the...
Hi all,
I'm building a timber framed garden room with a flat warm roof.
my build up for the roof will be:
joists
18mm OSB3 sub-deck
vapour control layer
100mm foil backed celotex GA4100 or similar
11mm OSB3 top deck
EPDM
My questions are:
1. Do I need a VCL considering the foil on the...
Planning on using a torch on cap sheet direct to fresh osb without using the recommended underlay...is this a bad idea? If the cap sheet is bitumen backed and therefore fully water proof and has good adhesion to the osb I'm struggling to work out what the underlay actually does...unless I'm...
Been looking for weeks but cannot find any specific details on this;
I'll try to explain but apologies if I waffle. I'm building a garden studio, timber frame, without overhang. The top of the cold roof has 25mm air gap above celotex insulation then osb roof, then will be epdm. The walls have...
About to wrap my timber framed garden office with the breathable membrane and battens but am unsure how the edge detail is finished with an EPDM roof. The cold roof rafters end flush with the stud wall rather than any overhang.
If I go by the limited diagrams seen so far (see attached), then...
I have searched high and low and not been able to find a solution to my problem. I want to convert my garage to a bedroom. It is the link between two bungalows with traditional pitched rooves.
My problem is that the joists run at a right angles to the normal path of cross ventilation, across...
