Hello fellow forum users,
Quick question for experienced carpenters/builders out there.
My floor boards currently meet right in the middle of where joist notching is.
What's the best way of fitting the t&g floorboards in my case, so these don't sag and bend the copper pipes then walked on...
We engaged a building to repair and renew some joists.
In the photo below you see newly installed joists. The joists are sistered and sit on a sleeper wall. The sister joists appear glued and not bolted together. Is this acceptable
In the photos below you can see an endplated installed...
I am about to put a chipboard new floor down in a bathroom and want to level the existing joists as they slope towards the party wall.
It is only a very small span (1m) that needs levelling as the floor that sits underneath the bath has not been removed.
I have looked at sistering the joists...
Hi all,
I have to run a cable across a kitchen ceiling. Obviously the joists are all going the wrong way.
The last time I did something like this I cut holes in the ceiling plasterboard large enough to get my drill in and then bored a small hole through the centre of the joist at the edge of...
Hi all,
been busy building a decking and I received all the materials for the frame four weeks ago. The joists have been stored outside on their sides on some brick footers.
Made some progress at the beginning then had to stand still for a while; thus out of the ten 4.8metres 120*47 joists I...
Recently had a full home re-wire and now the living room and passageway have exposed joists where the ceiling was ripped down to cable the new electrics.
before we plasterboard the ceilings I thought it might be a good opportunity to stick some insulation up to hopefully lower the heating bills...
I need to run central heating pipe horizontally under the floorboards of an upper floor. I need to go through only one 75mm wide beam, but I'm wary of boring or notching it, also because that would be quite close to the wall bearing the beam.
So I thought of running an 8mm or 10mm pipe...
I have a simple question, to which I have been getting conflicting answers:
Can I cut a section out of a flat roof joist to run through some ducting? Happy for it to be flat channel. The rafters are 170mm.
I've seen some info but think it's about floor boards:
I have seen enforcement...
Hi,
I will be framing my flat roof using 9 x 3 timbers.... what size/type of nails do i use to brin git all together (noggings/overlaps/framing etc) ?
Thanks.
Looks like I've had a historic leak in the bathroom. So far this is the only rot I've found. Would it be reasonable to cut out say half the depth of the joist, piece in a new section and then sister either side to add the strength back. I've ordered some boron gel to cover everything in after...
Hi Guys,
Looking at the attached plan... with the joists running left to right.... which joist size would be suitable:
1) 8x2
2) 8x3
3) 9x3
The internal walls are solid block and load bearing
Hi guys,
Would anyone be able to suggest the best way to frame this flat roof (cold roof because of height restrictions)? Will be using C24 9” x 3" and all the internal walls are solid block load bearing.
I was thinking about creating a 2 way fall to each side with firring strips. OSB and then...
Hi,
I’ve got a joist which has taken too many screw holes now.
Whats the best way to fill them without taking the board off?
Or is it a case of replace the part of the joist?
I am about to embark on a loft hatch enlarging project, I am trying to find some appropriately sized timber so I can sister some joists.
My current joists measure 35x80mm, I can't seem to find a direct replacements.
Is this an older joist size that is no longer used?
We have a garage that has a trussed roof that I want to install a plasterboard ceiling. We have to double board it to meet Building Control approval. To allow edges of the plasterboard to be supported I need to add noggins between the roof trusses, (trusses are at 500mm spacing).
Am I...
Hi,
All my floor joist bounce but after recently rearranging my bedroom the joist next the wall is now getting walked on more and is bouncing. I have tried glueing and screwing plywood to it but no joy. There is a 60mm gap between the joist and the wall, the joist is over a patio door.
See...
Hi folks,
I‘ve encountered some rot on our Victorian terrace home and I’d very much appreciate some advice.
Firstly, a couple of joists closest the front door were totally rotten- I think the old doorbell wire was acting as as a wick and directing water onto them for a hundred years or more...
I've finally gotten around to tearing up the carpet and replacing the landing floorboards.
They're full of nails and staples so would take days to pull up and sand, plus the boards aren't in great condition.
The current boards are sideways but I'd prefer them longways - is there an easy way...
I am having a plated underfloor heating system installed between the joists of my suspended timber floor throughout the house, so, I was wondering what the best subfloor type is to lay over the joists when the UFH has been installed.
So the floor joists are at roughly 450mm centres which is...
Hi,
I was taking into consideration to remove my chimney breast and an engineer advised to run a beam between the front and rear wall.
After my survey, I got to the conclusion that I could run a 152x89 without lowering the ceiling at first floor but this can happen only If I can cut some...
