This may sound stupid but my exterior wall in pebble dash painted over the years looks old and wondering if this can be over covered with new render without removing the pebble dash as seem very strong and would be a mess to remove it first.
Any experience tips advise would be highly appreciated.
Hi there,
Just moved into a new house which is an old terraced house built around late 1800s. There is plenty of work to get done on it not least the front rendering. The previous owners provided an invoice for work carried out in 2015 for damp proofing, pointing rendering the front of the...
Hi,
I'm an inexperienced first time buyer. November moved in to the house to find damp plaster on 1st floor bedroom wall (external).
Based on the description below and attached pics, what might be likely causes of the damp, and what repairs should I realistically expect? Are there any specific...
Hi, just signed up and wondering if anyone here can help with this one…
We live in a 1920s solid-walled house (red brick, cement rendered) that has a tendency towards dampness in the basement. Generally it’s all in check but we do get the odd issue here or there.
When we moved in we had gas...
Hi, we bought a house on a new development 2 years ago, the house was a couple of years old at the time, so is now around 4 years old.
A crack has now appeared in the render above the front door. I have approached a company to see if they can repair it but, based on the pictures, they have...
We recently had a flat fibreglass roof installed and we have had some leaking inside the wall next to one side. The external walls are rendered and the installer has been back and looked a few times and said it is cracks in the render, which he has sealed since. I’ve been on there and had a look...
What are peoples views on pebble dash render over a block wall compared to the smother type render? I was thinking the pebble dash would give a tougher finish compared to say the smooth or am I wrong in this?
Hi,
We have a wall that is letting in some water around the outside of a window. Please see attached images of inside and outside. I believe it's the brickwork and/or render around the window on the outside. The timber lintel is exposed. We recently sealed the coping stones above and the chimney...
Hi,
Hoping someone can help... I’ve had old window/ door patched in with roughcast. As you can see from photo the new roughcast does not match old one as grey render has been used ... I also know I’m never going to have an exact colour match as old roughcast is quite dirty. The roughcaster...
Hi everyone/anyone,
Got a builder working on my extension and the roughcast has been finished in the last week. I have noticed that at the rear of the house the join between old and new has some sort of metal beads(Not sure what it is?) running the height of the house. They have put expanding...
Hi guys.
Wondering if anyone can shed some thoughts on removing mock tudor beams? Surprisingly, there is very little info on this online and where forums threads have started, the responses are overwhelmingly based on 'don't do it! spruce it up!' its got character'.
I have had some quotes but...
Hello!
I'm currently removing a rotten bay from the exterior as the render has failed and the laths behind are totally rotted through.
1. Does anyone know what the black sheeting is called and what the modern version is called these day? That's failed and needs replacing too.
2. I'm planning...
Hello!
I'm in the process of removing render from the front of my how and I am just starting to tackle the bay box. It is totally rotten through so I am taking it back to the black waterproof membrane
I have a few questions to help guide me on what to do next:
1. Do I need to remove the black...
Hello,
I am constructing a small shed (3.5m x 2.2m) that will be used only for storage. I want to render the external walls with the K-Rend silicone render to match my outbuilding and my house. I was wondering if you could help me understand what the best way to construct the shed is so that it...
I have recently come into ownership of a Victorian terraced house on the south coast, with the front wall quite elevated and facing the sea (though at a distance of 200m or so) so it is subject to a lot of severe weather.
The back of the house has exposed brickwork on the first floor and...

Stone build house, external render 7x1m between flat-roof and main roof, replace guttering and fascia.
Will need hacking off but this shouldn't be difficult as half of it could be kicked off...

Hi, I noticed under my bay window outside it sounded hollow. Then I chopped off what you can see in the photo. But it doesn't seem like proper render, more like filler or something. It's white and a little bit soft/chalky.
It seems to be only under the bay window, the rest of the house is...
Hi
I hope someone can help me please, I am concerned about my mums house as there appears to be some stepped cracking outside coming through the render. I now this has been there a while as it was filled in five years ago when the outside was painted but as you can see it has appeared again...
Hello,
So I have recently brought a c.1800 stone cottage and am at the start of the extensive work it needs doing to it.
The area which is a bit of mine field is the topic of cement rendering and keeping walls breathable.
Now the house is basically split into 3 section as I've illustrated in...
