Hi there, I have a 1930s straight staircase which is in decent condition structurally but requires some attention. My plan is to renovate it by cladding over existing treads and risers and fix the squeaks from underneath - thankfully I can gain easy access as it is all open.
The main issue I...
Hi,
I have recently purchased a property and after starting to paint the hallway a brilliant white colour, i noticed filled in cracks that had been painted over by the previous owner.
The cracks are visible from the bottom all the way to the top of the stairs.
Are these a cause for concern or...
Dear all,
Thanks for reading my post. In the process of redoing the flooring in my house (circa 1970s construction), the tradesman secured the stairs with screws, glue and brackets, which didn't do much. He then drilled holes into the stairs and filled the enclosed stairs undercavity with...
I have a U turn staircase. There is a large gap (18mm) on one side between stringer and plasterboard wall, while the opposite side is cut about 12mm into the plasterboard. The gap is currently filled with foam, filler and caulk. Its uneven and cracked so I’ve removed the filler/caulk and raked a...
Hi can anyone pleaseeee help me , can this post be cut and taken out? Basically it’s to move furniture up my ridiculously narrow staircase! Whole headboard , base and bunch of other things won’t go up and getting rid of them isn’t an option! Wasn’t sure if this is supporting ceiling or not
When our house was built they finished the stairs really poorly! They seem to be slightly twisted so there are massive gaps in places between the stairs and the wall. It was covered by a flat bit of timber that looked awful. We’ve taken that off and are now trying to figure out how to create a...
Just wanted to check with those in the know if this is compliant with regs.
Quite simply two doors off a LOFT landing. Is the landing too small for compliance?
Appreciated,
Hello,
What's the best way to cover the gap between the floor and the riser of the stairs, in particular, the radiused section of the stair risers. Some kind of timber moulding would be ideal, however, I am at a loss how to neatly cover the radiused section.
Thankyou in advanced
I have purchased a house from an Estate. The previous owner has part converted the loft - there is dormer conversion with a bedroom, shower room, and separate landing, however it is only accessible via pull down stairs.
I would like to have proper stairs fitted, but not sure where to start...
Is this typically bearing any load of the stairs or simply a light studwork for the plasterboard that was attached to box in the bottom of the understairs before i stripped it all out?
Our house is almost 200 years old and the stairs is the original with a lot of repairs. As you can see in the picture there are massive gaps between the wall and the stairs. How do I fix this?
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone would be able to give some advice on how to move some copper pipes. My partner and I are currently renovating a house and we've decided to flip the direction of the stairs to give us more room upstairs.
As we'll also be moving the stairs back slightly we...
Hi all,
Just after a bit of advice/help at the moment.
Our staircase comes down into the living room, it is a 1980's house and all in our area seem the same.
The staircase in the living room makes the room feel very small and hard to heat as all the heat goes up the stairs.
We would like to...

Anyone got any ideas what best to do.... the risers are cracked. I have access now from the underside. Several glue blocks are not connected.

Thanks in advance
Hello i have a task on my hands but i fear i have overestimated my abilities... And i can't just admit to my wife that i feel defeated.
I need help measuring and calculating the new staircase so i don't screw up.
It starts with left winder then straight up to landing left turn and straight up. I...
Hi, Ive got open tread stairs built in 1986, Theres a bit that hangs just at head height and seems a hazard to drunk people.
Im wondering if theres any structural reason that it cant be cut higher so its more in line with the rail the stairs are attached to ?
thanks
Hi All, sorry about the long post. I'm going to move my stairs as this will allow me to squeeze in an extra room upstairs. I'm planning to build the new staircase myself from scratch - I realise that buying a kit is the easiest way to do this, but I fancy the challenge and reckon I can do it a)...
Evening all.
I’m looking for a bit of advice on a little project I’m hoping to complete over Easter.
Currently our tumble drier and washing machine sit proudly under our stairs. Electric, ventilation and water are already in there - but it’s a pain, as there’s not really enough space for a...
Hi all
I've used paint stripping gel to remove white paint from the steps of my stairs (still needs work but it's getting there)...
The middle of the stairs were originally covered with carpet so as you can see from the pic the wood colouring is different, but I'd like to keep the steps in...
