Hi,
There's a mouldy smell in my shower room, and I think it may be coming from the extractor fan. I removed the cover and cleaned around the motor and blades, which were pretty black, but I couldn't reach into the ducting.
First, I'd like to know if mould in extractor fan ducting is a thing...
Hello
I am currently finishing off my loft conversion and found that one of my rooms fails the minimum required ventilation according to building regs.

Purge - this is achieved by opening the window. The opening...
Hi there
First time using this forum so many thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide, it's very much appreciated! I'm in England - cold winters, warm summers.
I have a new shed (installed December) which, for the last two days, has dripped onto the floor from the ceiling for five...
Hi, My Father v. Sick & so just me now, to finish fireplace w/ stove. Air vent (I know correct size of hole required for our stove, floor cavity good, old house (so 5kw deducted pre-calculation) and air brick on outside wall, ground level and parallel to fireplace, all good) But where to...
Hi, My bathoom extractor and kitchen one both just have slat type grilles,
I'm wondering if they really should have those flap things on the ends ?
Maybe the moisture is blowing back into the rest of the flat from the shower?
Or maybe just a downward facing cowl ?
They have square ducting...
I'm renovating a drafty old house (draughtproofing, interior wall insulation, new windows, etc.) and installing an ASHP to run radiators. I'm now looking towards the kitchen more specifically. I'm aware of the need to have good ventilation and air exchange in the kitchen, but am reluctant to...
Hi,
I know old fireplace/hearth questions are talked about on here a lot but i don't think this question has been answered, or if it has, not comprehensively.
I have taken out the concrete hearth of an old disused fireplace, in preparation to re-lay the original t&g flooring throughout the...
I have an attached garage, which is part of an extension that was built in 2003.
It is unheated but usually stays at least 5c above the outdoor temperature.
The ceiling is plaster-boarded and artexed, but there is a gap around the edges, between the plasterboard and wall. It varies in width...
Hi, I've been renovating my house, and removed the front cover of this vent in my living room, I don't even remember what the front looked like.
The vent appears to just be a short pipe but has some channel on the inside so air doesn't just flow straight through the pipe. I have taken this...
Hi everyone,
Our Victorian ground floor flat has a number of walls with damp issues.
We recently changed our carpets and that allowed me to pop a few of the original floorboards up to have a look at the condition of the sub floor - I’m super worried about dry rot and other sinister issues...
Hi there, grateful for any advice.
Live in a top floor flat where the bathroom extractor is mounted in the ceiling, with a flue pipe extending vertically about 0.75m, topped with a mushroom clowl.
The extractor runs when bathroom lights are on, and on timer after the bathroom lights are...
Hello All.
1950's house - when we moved in a few years ago, it had poor heating and poor ventilation. Condensation and black mould was the result, unsurprisingly.
Heating has been greatly improved by way of new rads and a log burner. But the ventilation is still really bad.
Thinking that...
Hi all,
Recently I have noticed condensation falling back down through the extractor fan in my ensuite bathroom so went into the loft space to check it out.
I noticed the ducting was not insulated which I know I need to sort out from reading other forums on here but also noticed there appears...

Dear Forum,
It is my first time posting and I am hoping I can get some advice as I am a worried tenant and I would like to seek...
Hi all,
I’m after some advice on a condensation issue I’ve got in my recently built shed. I’ve read various forum posts but can’t seem to find a solution to my problem.
The floor is 25mm ply timber suspended. Standard stud walls with feather edge cladding and no internal sheathing yet...
Hi, I’ve got a fairly unusually designed house in that we’ve got a smaller lower roof section with soffits above the ground floor( see pictures) The house is cold all the time ( especially the hall way) and I’m convinced it’s due to the shear number of ventilation holes we have in lower soffit...
Hi all,
I have recently bought a house (1920s/30s) and want to insulate my loft. Currently there is about 100mm of fiberglass between the joists and floored with chipboard. I really need the loft for storage so rather than add extra glass wool I want to use multifoil under the rafters - it looks...
I used to have an internal wooden "sound baffle" over the passive air vent on the wall in the spare room which was great at keeping the sounds of the nearby road at bay. Unfortunately it was warped so I removed it when I decorated and replaced it with a simple air vent cover.
Now I'm using the...
Hi, I'm currently doing some work on the front garden to take the ground level below Dpc level and have removed paving slabs from the whole area. However after removing the ones in front of the front door, it's exposed the sub floor beneath the hallway. There's no outer brick skin present just...
Hi all
Just looking for some advice. I have built a summer house which is cladded with Hardie Plank followed by a breathable membrane. The frame is built with 4x2 and I'm using Rockwall at 75mm for the insulation.
I fixed the cladding directly against the membrane and frame so I want to create...
