You'll probably have to go to a store for them. That's if there are any left. You never know though, there might be more in the January sales.

It might be worth going to your local PC World and seeing if they have any in store (or if they can get you one from another store). It doesn't say on the site that this is an 'internet only' offer.

Good luck :p

256mB ram is a bit light imo. Standard I would be looking for now would be 1GB, worth running it by the lads on the Computing Hardware section too.

Might be worth checking a well known online auction site. You often find dealers selling new stock there, and you could get a higher spec one for the same price as the one you were looking at.

However, make sure that -

- the VAT is included in the final price before you bid/buy

- the laptop is not reconditioned (as many being sold there 'as new' are actually reconditioned stock)

- it comes with a warranty

I would agree with Spark123 - 256Mb is a bit low these days for the demands of modern programs. However, it will all depend on what she is using the laptop for.
Word processing, spreadsheets, etc - 256Mb more than enough.
Music editing - sufficient, but will be a bit slow.
Gaming or photo editing - get as much RAM as the computer can hold

If you need to speak with someone for advice I would recommend that you go to a little computer store. My experience (although I am generalising) is that many of PC World staff are not very clued up

Thanks for your feedback, a friend called to pc world tonight, packed, hence my enquiry, so' nipped on the net, got nothing, anymore shops,?

Well, PC World are owned by the same company as Dixons and Currys - so might be worth checking them out :)

Hmmm £299 is only going to get you a token laptop. i.e. one that looks nice and not much else. As mentioned, 256mb is a bit light on memory - I always recommend a minimum of 512mb to run windows xp or you're gonna have a pretty slow pc. The hard drive is small too - after a while, windows will be taking up almost a quarter of the available space on it.
If I were you, I'd bite the bullet and spend a little more - something like this would be much better http://www.dabs.com/productview.asp...tedId=11105&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11105,15

Also, be aware that windows vista will be released soon and that will not run on that £299 laptop. So you'll be buying something that will be limited to running windows xp.

Totally agree, and the staff in discount shops / sheds have very little if any real ability to advise on what is best as they have commission and sales targets in their equations.

I get my computers from
http://www.torchcomputers.co.uk/index.php?cPath=26 where there is good specialist knowledge.

I get my stuff from Novatech and have always been happy with them

I realise it's easy for me because they close enough to drive to, but see if anything take your fancy.

I would have though there'd be something equivalent local to you.

PC World are strong on adverts but not so strong on quality, service or VFM.

On the Which? survey, Sept 2006:

- best place to buy a computer - % rated as very good - PC World scored 12%. Local Independent - 46%; John Lewis 45%; Manufacturer 33%; Internet 29%; Staples 12%; Supermarket 11%

- The "Advent" brand is very unreliable and least likely to be recommended to a friend :(

Yes there are those who will slag Dell off, bnut I have been buying Dells (as well as making my own) for donkey's years and I have never had an issue with them. Yes things do go wrong, but they fix them really quickly.

To be honest my girlfriend bought a laptop from Dell two years ago, broke down after 6 months, they replaced it with a new machine..transfered the HDD information over for her, and since then no problems...(She ommitted to tell them she had dropped the case it was in about 10ft!!)
