It used to take months, but for some reason the process has been allowed to run down by the Tories. And no, the volume hasn't gone up much in that time.

It's not so much that wages have fallen, as people expectations have increased massively. TV's, phones, cars, CH, H&C running, unlimited food, nicely decorated homes, all the luxury we take for granted.

Trouble is they have fallen as well and the range of necessities have increased. Some are debatable but fact more things are needed. Rent a place and it will have some of the aspects you mention. Nicely decorated - yes often the will be but not all.

Say some one wants a phone and internet access. These days a 5g phone and an unlimited contract is more of an option than it was. I watched a few netflix and prime movies that way recently.

I visit a rural area from time to time. Some shop via uber as they have no car or alternative - big shops only when needed. Some run two cars so that they can realistically work.

It was normal to have large families in the UK right through to the 1930's, but numbers were declining

Survival rates were lower. My mom only just made it. Hospital gave up. Taken home and somehow she survived. One of my fathers sisters wasn't so lucky. One of his brothers died for other reasons safety related.

One of my nans needed food support from the family. Just a state pension as it was then. The landlord stopped collecting rent when her husband died. Her enjoyment was a few pence on the horses a week. And I do mean a few old pence. When she needed care as she had nothing the state covered the bill.

China's strange changes regarding children that people can have probably related to family sizes needed as people move out of povety and the addition of a decent health services, sewers and all sort of things including accommodation.

My generation managed, and still manage to do it.

Clearly, if you have to go to work just to pay childminders to allow you to go to work, then your business model is all wrong.

I agree there are wider issues when you get kids leaving school with no idea, no motivation and no ability to get the jobs that can actually support themselves.
This idea that a family unit needs two jobs is apologist nonsense.

If a family or a single person knew that if they had a child and they would not get a council flat, would not get money to clothe and feed them, would not get money to pay others to look after them, then they may think twice before making one.

Yes, there will be the exceptions, the "mistakes", the unplanned, and yes there should be help for those as part of any social care system.

I always remember a male pensioner who was crippled and lived nearby - he couldn't afford heating, couldn't afford to switch electric lights on, he made do with one of those little paraffin lamps for light. His weekly treat was 2oz of cheese and it had to be no more than 2oz.

Both my parents worked i and numerous other children came home to a empty house from school

Today my parents and thousands of other parents would be arrested and charged with neglect

Planned kids no support. Unplanned kids get support .
