If you can get almost everything locally it does make your life easier and nicer, local communities you can walk to are nicer than soulless retail parks or urban areas where you don't know anybody.
I am similar. In fact no one drives to a retail park just to hang out. They are not nice places.
We have areas near us where people go to just to hang out at nice bars, or even the library, or community centres.

We have cities smaller than Amsterdam, and others that are bigger. It doesn't matter whether the overall population is, given we are talking about city scale issues. They have largely succeeded in getting people out of their cars in city areas. As a result of this, the roads are less congested, and more pleasant to live.

Another lesser example I would point to is York. Here urban cycling is hugely popular, and again, they limit car access to the city centre, encourage park & ride. There is no single thing they have done, but a range of ideas to limit car access. its really improved the city.

Amsterdam started from the point of view as viewing a car accident as morally bad as a matter of policy, and worked to design out the chance of them based on this. So they invested in pubic transport, cycle infrastructure etc, and walkability.

There are areas where car use is still too high though. Urban design is an ongoing project.
York is a nice city and I should imagine dividing it up into 15 minute walk areas could have positive outcomes.
My job in the past took me to areas of cities that were less salubrious and I wonder how that unfolds in the future against a backdrop of guns drugs and the like.

Are we comparing like for like given Holland's population is 17 million and at conservative guess Britains population is round the 75 million mark.
That matters little when comparing the activities within cities. I think you know that.

I don't know why York would do something different to everyone else. I don't know where you got 15 minute walk areas from.

The issue comes with all the associated policies and band waggon jumping.

“residents will still be able to drive to every part of the city at any time” adding “in the future, during certain times of the day, you may need to take a different route (e.g. using the ring road) if you want to travel by car”.

So it's yeah, but no but yeah.

With all the pinch points, humps, car free areas etc. People don't trust councils to get it right. No wonder people are against the idea. Fine for hippies who work from home in FinTech testing sw, not so good for a care working visiting bed ridden old people.

Oxford councillors being prime examples of we know what's best for you.

ahh so there will be restrictions?

What about gardeners, cleaners, plumbers, window cleaners, food delivery drivers?

Yes, as part of Oxford's traffic management scheme to reduce congestion. Do you not think it would be better if congestion was reduced on the busiest roads?

Do you think the congestion magically disappears because you closed the road?

Businesses will be exempt from fines.
Sorry I'm not following - I thought this wasn't about restricting people's freedoms.
