Hello all, I have a problem because I failed to note the connections before removing a two way switch. It may be further complicated because one of the 2 switches is a two gang wich operates an external light.

The set up is in the hallway and consists of:

switch X is a 2 gang switch with two cables routing to it; a) 3 core RED/ YELLOW/ BLUE and EARTH and b) 3 core RED/ YELLOW/ BLUE (no apparent earth but may have been chopped back)This pair of switches is meant to operate an external light (one way)and an internal hallway light (two way)
switch Y is a 1 gang switch with one cable 3 core RED/ YELLOW/ BLUE and EARTH
This switch is meant to operate the same hall light (2 way).

The two gang switches' cables have one RED and one BLUE wire from each cable joined and insulated (not connected to switches at all) leaving YELLOW and BLUE in one cable and RED and YELLOW in the other (apart from earth). A short jumper wire was used to connect the live red between gangs (switches)

New switches seem to have L1;L2 and L3 terminals now, is L1 always the same as common or another way is the single terminal always the common?

Can anyone please advise where the remaining wires should go to all switches. I think I have tried every combination without and it all worked just fine before I interfered.

All help gratefully recieved.

As far as I can make out The cable with the free red and yellow wires go to the 1-way switch (o/s light). The red goes to the common, with a link to the common on the other switch. The yellow will go to L1.

The hall switch from the other cable will have the yellow and blue going to L1 and L2.

The upstairs landing switch will have the red to common and yellow and blue to L1 and L2.

Thank you for the prompt reply Luminaire, I will certainly try that tomorrow (bit dark now) and it may be where I have been going wrong as all the diagrams I have been using including the one supplied with a new switch show the yellow always going to the common.
