Heating system not working unless hot water is on

Found buzzing from the 3 way valve, I've removed the top of it and the valve seems to move freely but not very far, see pics showing the valve movement, i seem to get hot water and heating whichever way it is so wondering if the valve itself is faulty, previously had issues after draining system with trapped air so reluctant to do it if I can avoid, by just buying the Head kit but I'm puzzled by the way it's behaving

I've tried lubricating it but it seems to come to a hard stop at each end, any advice is appreciated

1. The valve's spindle doesn't move very far - around 30 degrees side to side. So you picture looks as if its OK.
2. More likely to be a fault with the actuator mechanism, but can't guarantee it.

Tested, all good apart from Heating Only, not getting power on orange

Would that explain not getting power on orange for heating only?

Although, I'm pretty sure that's knackered but how is it that there is heating and hot water flowing when the valve is in either position?

The actuator head has micro switches inside ,that are triggered by the movement of the motor.
You can't get central heating only because there is no voltage from the micro switch to it's orange wire ,which in turn connects to the boiler to fire it up.
You get both heating and hot water because the boiler is fired up by the voltage from the cylinder stat ( which is also connected to the same terminal as the orange wire in the wiring centre).

Thanks for the explanation, I get that and suspected the head was knackered and have ordered a replacement (whole unit as it was no dearer)

I still can't understand with the head off whichever way i turn the valve manually heat is sent both ways even with only hot water on

If you move the spindle fully to one extent ( or the other ),that would close one of the ports ,and you wouldn't get heat to both rads and cylinder . How long did you leave it in that position before drawing your conclusion ?
If you are correct you need to replace the whole valve.

What make/model of 3-port is that? The soldering around the spindle sleeve looks like somebody's DIY.

honeywell v4073a1039 is the make and model of the valve

I left it a while in both positions but I'll do another test before I resign myself to having to drain the system :(

Without the head fitted, the valve will pass irrespective of where you have placed it. In use, there is always tension on the ball either from the spring return or the driving of the synchron motor.
